Why Coloring Is An Excellent Meditation For Stress Relief

coloringColoring is a simple meditative practice that has gained huge popularity in our highly stressful corporate world…. and there are real reasons why you can achieve a meditative mindlessness, remove anxiety and work through trauma while coloring.

The rhythmic activity of choosing a color and copying that color around similar shapes that surround a mandala, and choosing another color and shape, and repeating… is a simple and relaxing way to achieve a form of mindlessness similar to what we reach for in our meditations.

We seek to remove self-talk and replace it with a theta wave brain flow of aware creativity.

Imagination is Manifestation

Before we choose a color, we activate our imagination, the part of our awareness that can see the future and imagine what that future will look like.

Emotions are the result of our imagination… and run fast as thoughts along our emotional endocrine system … which is full of hormones produced in our brains as a result.

It is this hormone rich world of our endocrine system that activates a meditative theta wave consciousness.

There is a crossover with mindfulness and also with mantras: activities in which the brain is engaged just enough to stop it whirring, but not so much that the concentration is draining.

Within this Theta Wave state… deep breathing and relaxation allow your brain to fall into an electrical rhythm similar to sleeping.  This is your brain in the theta-wave state.

It is a powerful creative state of conscious awareness that allows your body to instantly respond to your desires.

Creativity is Key to Relieving Stress

Imagine the circumstances that stress us out and we start a cascade of harmones associated with the flight and fight response.  The feelings of stress and anxiety are related to the hormone adrenalin pumping through your body in preparation to fight or run away.

Stress is a response to our imagined experience that things are going,… or will go bad for us.

Clinical psychologist Ben Michaelis and Souris Hong, author of bestselling adult coloring book Outside the Lines, stopped by HuffPost Live to discuss some of the meditative benefits of coloring for the adult set.

“There is a long history of people coloring for mental health reasons,” Michaelis says. “Carl Jung used to try to get his patients to color in mandalas at the turn of the last century, as a way of getting people to focus and to allow the subconscious to let go. Now we know it has a lot of other stress-busting qualities as well.”

We are 100% in charge of our own thoughts.  But how do we stop the train of negative thoughts from taking us away from reality?

The Healing Power Of Creation

Focus on something completely different.  It’s really that easy.

Coloring is an easy means to express oneself and de-stress along the way.

By allowing our minds to focus on creating what we want to see in our world, we stop the creation of adrenaline and allow our body to return to an emotional balance.

Twenty minutes of coloring gives our body enough time to remove the adrenaline out of our blood and allows our mind-body to relax.

Psychologist Antoni Martínez explained to the Huffington Post. “We can use it to enter into a more creative, freer state. I recommend it in a quiet environment, even with chill music. Let the color and the lines flow.”

Healing Trauma by Coloring

Lucy Fyles, 24, has a blog on which she reviews coloring-in books from a mental health perspective. She said: “I have a very active mind, made worse by anxiety. It just seems to quieten it down and slow it down. I’ll go to a coloring book, I’ll be incredibly stressed, I cannot stop the thoughts swirling around in my head. And half an hour later, I’ll notice that I’m calmer. My mind’s calmed down.”

Trama is compounded when we engage with an imagined future and place that imagined future on our present situation. From this perspective we can feel a deep sense of fear and lack of control over our circumstances.

With the aid of a proper support team, we can disengage from our past by recognizing our present situation is not the same and if we were again in the past, with our present knowledge and standing beside ourselves while viewing the trama happening… we certainly would have interjected and changed the situation.

When we find ourselves relating to our present world from within the mind of what has happened in the past we negate our strengths.

We can stop that train of emotional thought by focusing on the choices we can make while coloring.  It is not entirely the act of coloring but the act of changing our thoughts that can allow us to gain emotional balance in the present moment.

Once we have come back to a neutral emotional state, it is easier to hear guidance from our natural intuition.
